Hardwired alarms connect to 120V with battery backup and are usually interconnected, so match the brand family to keep the interconnect working. Battery-only smoke alarms sold in California must have a 10-year sealed battery. Combination smoke and CO alarms cover both hazards in units with gas appliances or attached garages.
